Al Weissmann has worked for the US Postal Service for over 35 years... the past 21 as a postal inspector.  The Postal Inspection Service is the law enforcement arm of the postal service and is one of America’s oldest federal law enforcement agencies.   They enforce numerous statutes pertaining to the mail such as armed robberies of employees and facilities, the intentional mailing of dangerous material such as bombs, drugs and biohazardous materials and they also investigate child pornography, mail fraud and handle security related issues for the postal service.  Postal inspectors are armed federal agents who execute court ordered search warrants and are authorized to make arrests. They consistently achieve a conviction rate of over 98%.  Al’s first assignment was in Milwaukee, WI. where he endured nearly four years of frigid temperatures, poor pizza and bad bagels before returning to NY in 1991.  Most of his career has been spent investigating mail thieves but for the past 4 years he has been the PR person for his agency.   That means handling the bright lights of cameras and microphones of reporters who show up at the scene of an armed robbery of a post office or meeting the public and warning them about the many scams and scammers out there waiting to claim their next victim.   Today Al will talk about the continuing problem of fake check scams via the internet and US Mail.
